JMS Says – Call for papers
JMS Says is the essay section of the Journal of Management Studies and has published over 20 essays since its launch in 2016. The JMS Says section is overseen by Mark Healey as Associate Editor, and Trish Reay and Thomas Roulet as JMS Says Co-Editors.
Objective and expectations
We expect essays to provoke new thinking on the field of management and management research, as broadly understood. We expect essays to develop interesting and original ideas, challenge conventional wisdom or expectations, and trigger new debates and discussions for our field. Essays are not expected to develop theory or rely on empirical material, rather, our two criteria when considering essays are the following:
- Essays should be deeply personal and authors should bring their own experience into the narrative. Essays should thus be subjective and take the interpretive stance of the authors. Those personal experiences should be integrated into the essay throughout.
- Because we expect a clear, introspective and provocative argument and an explicit “call to action” in the essay, there should be very few academic references (roughly 4-5 references maximum). If your argument requires engagement with existing literature through extensive citations, then your paper is probably NOT a good fit for JMS Says. In this case, please consider a more conventional methodological, theoretical or empirical paper route.
We are keen to hear from authors at all career stages, with special encouragement for junior scholars and scholars from geographically and socially marginalized communities.
Publication process
Prospective authors should first submit a 300-word proposal via the JMS ScholarOne site (https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jmstudies). The proposal will be assessed by the editorial team at which point the editors will decide whether or not to invite authors to submit a full essay of a maximum of 3,000 words. The subsequent full essays are handled directly by the editors, who will provide feedback and make the determination of whether the essay continues in the process.
Please note that in order to ensure that a wide range of voices are heard, if authors have previously had an essay accepted at JMS, then there will be a three-year period from the date of acceptance in which the authors may not submit another essay proposal.
We encourage you to look at some of the recent essays we have published, so you can see what we look for. The JMS Says collection can be found here.
